Geary Lecture "Is Pay-For-Performance Effective?"
Date: 25/11/2010.
The second Geary Lecture of 2010 was given by Professor Canice Prendergast, W. Allen Wallis Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Canice Prendergast, who was a research assistant at the ESRI from 1983 to 1985, is now one of the world’s foremost researchers on workplace incentives and their impact on productivity. He is currently the W. Allen Wallis Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.


ESRI Higher Education Policy Conference "Higher Education Policy: Evidence from Ireland and Europe"
Date: 16/11/2010.
This conference included discussion of research and policy on Higher Education access, participation, student experience and retention in the Irish context. In addition, international speakers highlighted issues emerging in the UK context and in the broader European context.


Policy Seminar - The use of indicators and targets in social inclusion policy.

The Social Inclusion Division of the Department of Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs, the Economic and Social Research Institute and UCD Social Science Research Centre co-hosted this policy seminar on social inclusion indicators and targets on Wednesday, 3 November, 2010 at the Economic and Social Research Institute.

ESRI - TCD Conference: Turning Globalisation to National Advantage: Economic Policy Lessons from Ireland’s Experience

Conference on Resource Allocation, Financing and Sustainability in Health Care

This conference discussed the challenges for Ireland’s health care system, drawing on the work undertaken for the recently published Report of the independent Expert Group on Resource Allocation and Financing in the Health Sector and the research that underpinned the Group’s Report. A key focus of this report was to explore how the resources currently devoted to our health system could be better allocated to deliver the objectives of health policy, and how the system might be financed in a fair and equitable way to support best patient care. "Budget Perspectives" Conference
The 13th annual ESRI/FFS "Budget Perspectives" Conference was held on Tuesday, 12 October 2010. Speakers included David Miles (Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England), Jim O’Leary (N.U.I. Maynooth), Joe Durkan (University College, Dublin), Tim Callan (ESRI), Brian Nolan (University College, Dublin), Claire Keane (ESRI), Anne Nolan (ESRI). Presentation event at Department of Finance
To mark the 50th anniversary of the signature of the Memorandum and Articles establishing the Economic Research Institute on 24 June 1960, Prof Frances Ruane (Director), and Dr TK Whitaker (ESRI founder) presented the Minister for Finance, Brian Lenihan TD, with a copy of the first book published by the Institute as well as some of its recent publications. 24th June 2010.


"Making Equality Count: Irish and International Approaches to Measuring Equality and Discrimination"
This Research Conference was held in Dublin Castle on 23rd June. The Conference examined international experience in measuring equality and discrimination and highlighted good practice developed in Ireland to date. Further details ..

The seminar on Environmental Policy and Projections for Ireland reflected the importance of the issues for Irish society and was the first of the special events to mark the Institute's fiftieth birthday. The seminar was introduced by Laura Burke of the Environmental Protection Agency.
