The Institute celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2010. It was founded with financial support from the Ford Foundation, and with institutional support from Dr TK Whitaker, one of Ireland's leading Civil Servants, who was then Secretary (General) of the Department of Finance. Its founding Director was the eminent statistician Dr RC Geary. While funded primarily today by the Irish government, the Institute is independent, objective and impartial in its commentary on government policy. This independence is realized by its contractual obligation to publish all its commissioned research and place it in the public domain, and by its commitment to peer-review for all of its research. Finance for the Institute comes by way of a grant-in-aid from the Department of Finance; funds linked to major research and information programmes from government departments and agencies; research grants from European and Irish research funding agencies; and funds from philanthropic and business sources. The annual grant-in-aid is essential to the Institute’s ability to develop its strategic research programmes and to build up research teams that can explore key issues as they arise. |
