Principal Activities

The Institute’s macro model is an essential piece of national infrastructure which produces independent, consistent medium term economic and environmental projections for Ireland and can be used to chart alternative growth scenarios for the economy. This type of analysis assists the Irish government in formulating policy and in winning support and understanding for its economic strategy abroad. It is also sought by international organisations, such as the European Commission and the International Monetary Fund, and players on international financial and equity markets.

Similarly the Institute’s tax-benefit model enables the income distribution effects of budgetary changes to be analysed systematically and can address contentious issues in relation to the equity of the budgetary tax changes needed to help us reach fiscal balance. It can also be used to look at how best to restructure the tax system and put it on a more sustainable footing.

The Institute's research on health, building on the ESRI’s health information databases, can provide major inputs into the reform of the resource allocation model for the health system. And there are many more such examples that are laid out in the Institute’s Research Programmes.
