Health Research

Research in Health forms a fundamental part of the work of the Division. In particular, research projects/reviews/reports are provided for the major health agencies and government departments at the national level and for a wide range of international organisations, including the European Commission, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, the World Bank and the World Health Organisation. Further information on research using HIPE data can be found in Journal Articles.

The HIPE and NPRS National Databases

The HIPE and NPRS Unit is an integral part of the Health Research & Information Division of the ESRI. Both the Hospital In-Patient Enquiry (HIPE) system and the National Perinatal Reporting System (NPRS) are responsible for the timely and accurate collection of national health data. HIPE is the principal source of national data on discharges from acute hospitals in Ireland. NPRS provides national statistics on perinatal events, in particular data on pregnancy outcomes, perinatal mortality and important aspects of perinatal care.
