Please see History of Coding in Ireland for full details.

The coding scheme consists of:

  • ICD-10-AM - Is an alphanumeric coding scheme and is structured by body system and aetiology, and comprises three, four and five character categories. ICD-10-AM consists of a tabular list of diseases and accompanying index and has been modified in Australia by the National Centre for Classification in Health (NCCH) with assistance from clinicians and clinical coders. Close links are maintained with WHO to ensure that international compatibility is maintained
  • ACHI - Is a multi-axial classification structured by body system, site and procedure type. ACHI consists of a tabular list of procedures and accompanying index of seven digit codes
  • ACS - These national standards are developed by the NCCH to provide guidance in the application of ICD-10-AM and ACHI codes. Standards are categorised by site and or body system according to the clinical specialty to which a disease or procedure relates
  • ICS - Irish Coding Standards are developed to complement the ACS, please click link to view
