Clinical Coder Training

The ESRI provide training for all personnel involved in HIPE clinical coding throughout the Irish hospital system. Training is provided on the current clinical coding classification and on the HIPE Instruction Manual which contains information on demographic and administrative variables. Courses also provide instruction on the use of the HIPE Software suite. Clinical coders must be nominated by their hospitals to attend these courses. Training courses at all levels are held both in the ESRI and regionally. Some courses will be held by teleconference.

HIPE Training Courses

This is a 2.5 hours training session delivered via teleconference.  The course gives new Coders, and others working within the HIPE system a basic introduction to HIPE and includes training on the use of the HIPE Instruction Manual including the HIPE variables.  Click here to apply for this course

This two day course is held within two weeks following the Introduction to HIPE, and provides Coders with an introduction to the ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS classification. The course includes a two hour introduction to Anatomy & Physiology presented by an expert speaker, and includes training in the use of W-HIPE software. Participants must complete the Introduction to HIPE before attending this course. Click here to apply for this course

This three-day training course is held approximately one month after Coding Skills I. The course is centred on clinical coding and clinical coding guidelines. The course also includes an introduction to Casemix and W-HIPE training. Participants must complete Introduction to HIPE and Coding Skills I before attending this course. This course is held over three days, and clinical coders are invited to participate 3-6 months after having completed Coding Skills II. The course aims to consolidate training and work experience and it is expected that clinical coders will have had experience coding within the hospital environment. More in-depth discussion of codes and classification guidelines are provided in conjunction with further training on clinical specialties. This course includes a presentation on the application of HIPE data. Specialised training in W-HIPE is also provided. Click here to apply for this course

One-day clinical coding workshops for Coders provide clinical and coding information on specialty areas such as Neoplasms, Cardiology, Obstetrics, Diabetes and Z-codes. Workshops will primarily address coding issues in depth and also where appropriate will incorporate a guest speaker who is an expert in the area to address the clinical aspects of the topic. Coders are invited to submit preferences for specialty workshops. Click here to apply for this course

This course is offered to experienced coders and held on demand. It is very popular with coders who like to maintain their coding skills and update their knowledge in the continually evolving medical field. Topics covered in the course are classification theory, coding guidelines, specialty coding and a review of data quality that integrates coding of high frequency conditions and procedures. These courses focus on the Anatomy & Physiology aspects of a body system which is presented by an expert speaker. This lecture is followed by one hour on the relevant coding and classification guidelines. Click here to apply for this course

Clinical Coder Starter Pack
