NEW PROJECTS
The Gender Pay Gap: Examining the latest evidence on gender pay differentials in Ireland.
Tim Callan, Seamus McGuinness, Philip O'Connell, Helen Russell.
Recent data suggest that women earn about 15% less than men on an hourly basis. To what extent is this due to differences in the age and experience profiles of male and female employees? And what role is played by the concentration of women and men into particular occupations and industries? An understanding of these issues is central in framing appropriate policies directed at labour market equality. These issues will be explored in a project commissioned by the Equality Authority.
The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA)
The ESRI is a partner in this major new study which aims to fulfil the need for information and research on ageing. It will involve a long-term survey of a representative sample of up to 10,000 Irish people over the age of 50 charting their health, social and economic circumstances over at least a 10-year period. Respondents will be interviewed at two yearly intervals and the first wave of data collection will take place in 2008. It is a very ambitious study covering all the domains of respondents’ lives, such as health, living standards and social participation and will involve face-to-face interviews and measurement of physical and biological parameters. Being longitudinal in nature, it will provide in-depth information on processes as well as point in time assessments.
The study is being undertaken by a cross-institutional, multi-disciplinary team of experts from the Dundalk Institute of Technology, the Economic and Social Research Institute, the National University of Ireland Galway, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork, University College Dublin and the University of Limerick. The Principal Investigator is Professor Rose Anne Kenny of the Department of Medical Gerontology TCD. A group of international scientists advises the TILDA investigators.
Professor Brendan Whelan, who was Director of the ESRI until November 2006, has been seconded to TCD as Professor of Statistics and Survey Design and Research Director of the TILDA project. He is responsible for the overall design and implementation of the study, in consultation with the Principal Investigator and the Steering Committee.
The ESRI Survey Unit will also be responsible for the data collection and data processing aspects of the project.
Further information may be obtained from the TILDA website at www.tilda.ie.
