NEW PROJECTS
Research on Participation in and Progression from the Leaving Certificate Applied
Researchers Emer Smyth/ Selina McCoy/ Delma Byrne
The Leaving Certificate Applied programme has been in existence for more than a decade. Previous research has indicated some differences across schools in the implementation of the programme (DES, 2001; Gleeson et al., 2002). However, relatively little is known about the profile of students taking the programme and their experiences after leaving school. This study, funded by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, will include a comprehensive examination of the profile of schools providing the programme, the characteristics of young people who participate and how these young people fare in their post-school educational and labour market experiences. The study will be carried out in two main phases, drawing on existing data sources as well as primary research. In particular, the study will draw on the regular nationally representative School Leavers’ Survey and on the longitudinal study of post-primary students. The final report is due for completion in November 2008.
Reasons For Low Participation in Higher Education by the Non-Manual Socio-Economic Group
Researchers
O'Connell,Philip J / McCoy,Selina / Kelly,Elish
While overall participation in higher education has risen steadily in Ireland since the 1960s, trends in the patterns of participation among the non-manual group are distinct, with relative stability in higher education entry rates over time. This study, funded by the Higher Education Authority, proposes to draw on a number of existing data sources to examine the issues for those from non-manual backgrounds, considering their initial educational experiences, the nature of their post-school choices and the impact on their post-school pathways. It will also examine the income levels associated with individuals from this group and assess their situation relative to financial support criteria. To further examine why young people make the post-school choices that they make, the study will also include qualitative interviews with young people from the non-manual socio-economic group to examine their post-school choices and the factors influencing these choices. The final report is due for completion in March 2008
