NEW PROJECTS

Security Implications of Climate Change

Tol,Richard S J

Commentators frequently cite the prospect of climate-change-induced violent conflict as one of the main reasons for greenhouse gas emission reduction. War would break out over dwindling water and food resources, and hordes of refugees fleeing sea level rise would destabilize whole societies.

Cynics may argue that this is just the latest fad among alarmists, now that serious research has pooh-poohed earlier "we’re all gonna die" stories. Still, there has not been much research on the impact of climate change on violent conflict, and thus there is the possibility that these concerns are warranted.

This project for the US Environmental Protection Agency, in cooperation with Stratus Consulting, aims to fill this gap, and come up with the first ever estimates of the effect of climate change on the probability of violent conflict and the associated economic impact.

Multiple Inequalities: An Analysis of Census 2006 Data

Dorothy Watson, Helen Russell, Emma Quinn and Pete Lunn.

This project, commissioned by the Equality Authority, will make use of 2006 Census data to examine inequalities in education, employment and housing among those whose circumstances would be covered under several of the nine grounds governed by equality legislation. The main question is whether there is evidence of cumulative disadvantage associated with the presence of more than one of the nine criteria. The project will analyse the Census 2006 data, including the 5% sample, and report to the Equality Authority by summer 2009.
