NEW PROJECTS

Irish TIMES: The Integrated MARKAL and EFOM System (TIMES) Energy Model for Ireland

Richard Tol

In the Irish TIMES project, the TIMES model will be developed for Ireland. TIMES is a detailed bottom-up model of energy supply. It is the dynamic successor of the better-known MARKAL model. TIMES can be used for costing of energy and environment policies, and for exploring alternative futures in great technological detail. The project is financed by the Environmental Protection Agency. University College Cork is the main contractor. The ESRI is responsible for building a model of energy demand for the period 2025-2050.

The Cost of Stroke in Ireland

Miriam Wiley and Samantha Smith

This project, in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), aims to estimate the economic burden of stroke in Ireland. Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Patients who survive an acute stroke episode are often left with some degree of disability and many become dependent on care givers. With a high mortality and disability burden, the economic cost of stroke is also expected to be high and it is estimated that cerebrovascular diseases account for 2-5% of total health care costs in industrialized countries. In Ireland, stroke accounts for 7.4% of mortality and approximately 10,000 people are admitted to hospitals with stroke disease as a primary diagnosis every year, with an average length of stay in excess of 20 days. It is estimated that approximately 30,000 people are survivors of stroke, many of whom have residual disability. It is therefore important to assess the cost burden associated with stroke in the economy. The project is funded by the Irish Heart Foundation and follows on from the Irish National Audit of Stroke Care which examined in detail the state of hospital and community stroke care in the country.
