The ESRI was established 50 years ago this year. In recognition of the important contribution of the ESRI to Irish society since its foundation in June 1960, a number of special events are being held during 2010. The first event, the Seminar on Environmental Policy for Ireland, was held on 18th February. The next event will be the Geary Lecture (see below for details).

Visit our website for further details and information on special events to be held throughout 2010.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

Geary Lecture "Social Mobility and Equality of Opportunity"

Venue: ESRI, Whitaker Square, Sir John Rogerson's Quay, Dublin 2.
Date: 11/03/2010
Time: 4 p.m.
Speaker: Professor Richard Breen (Yale University).

The first Geary Lecture of 2010, to be given by Professor Richard Breen (Yale), is one of the special events being held during 2010 to mark the Institute's fiftieth birthday.

Equality of opportunity is a principle that commands almost universal popular support and which many governments seek to promote. Social mobility - the degree to which people and families move between positions of social and economic advantage and disadvantage - is sometimes proposed as a way of assessing the extent of equality of opportunity. In this lecture, Richard Breen argues that, once we pay close attention to how social mobility is defined and measured and how equality of opportunity is conceptualized, we find that there is, in fact, no straightforward relationship between them. And so, despite claims to the contrary made by politicians and sometimes by social scientists, social mobility cannot be used as a measure of equality of opportunity.

For further details on the Geary Lecture please visit the ESRI website.

Entrance is free. All are welcome. For planning purposes, please register by emailing your name, contact number and organisation  to admin@esri.ie, or phone Bridget on 01 8632000.

New Projects

Causes and Consequences of Early Socio-Cultural Integration Processes Among New Immigrants in Europe (Scip)
Frances Mcginnity and Emma Quinn (ESRI) in conjunction with teams from Trinity College Dublin, the University of Göttingen, the University of Essex, Utrecht University and the Netherlands Institute for Social Research.

The SCIP project studies integration trajectories of new immigrants in four European countries: Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland and Great Britain. Its substantive focus is on migrants’ socio-cultural integration. Two cross-national waves of survey data will be collected among groups of new immigrants that vary along a number of dimensions, including religion (Catholics versus Muslims), social status (medium to high-skill versus low-skill migrants) and political identity (EU citizens versus non-EU-citizens). In all four countries, recently arrived Poles will be sampled, along with new immigrants from Turkey (in Germany), Turkey and Morocco (in the Netherlands), and Pakistan (in the UK). The project is led by Professor Claudia Diehl from the University of Göttingen and funded by the NORFACE research initiative (see www.norface-migration.org).
