The ESRI was established 50 years ago this year. In recognition of the important contribution of the ESRI to Irish society since its foundation in June 1960, a number of special events are being held during 2010, the first two being the Seminar on Environmental Policy for Ireland and the Geary Lecture (see below for details).

Seminar on Environmental Policy for Ireland

Reflecting the importance of the issues for Irish society we are beginning the series of special events to mark the Institute's fiftieth birthday with this seminar on environmental issues.

The aim of the conference is to provide a forum for debate on economic policy issues relevant in the European context. New Projects

A Profile of Educate Together Schools
Merike Darmody, Selina McCoy, Emer Smyth.
This study, funded by Educate Together, focuses on the social, economic and educational characteristics of students enrolled in different kinds of primary schools, particularly Educate Together schools. In particular, it explores the composition of Educate Together schools, the social and economic background of students enrolled in these schools, prevalence of students with special educational needs, levels of parental involvement and children’s experiences of school.

Strengthening the Capacity of Pacific Developing Member Countries to Respond to Climate Change
Richard S.J. Tol.
This project, for Asian Development Bank, will estimate the economic impact of climate change on countries and territories in the Pacific, and evaluate options to adapt.

The Value of Lost Load
Eimear Leahy, Richard S. J. Tol.
This project, for ESB International, will update our earlier estimates of the value of lost load. It will explore the economic impacts of a longer term interruption of the gas supply.

Analysis of the Impact of High Oil and Gas Prices
Andrew Kelly (AP EnvEcon, UCD), Adele Bergin and Richard S. J. Tol.
This project, for Siemens, will assess the economic impacts of price shocks for oil and gas as well as of sustained high prices.
