ESRI's 50th Anniversary

The ESRI is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. In recognition of the important contribution of the ESRI to Irish society since its foundation in June 1960, a number of special events are being held during 2010. Anniversary events so far include a reception with the President of Ireland, Mrs Mary McAleese on January 19th; a conference on climate change on February 18th; and a special Geary lecture in sociology, presented by ESRI alumnus Professor Richard Breen, Yale University on March 11th. RTE Archives marked the occasion by two programmes which covered interviews with the Institute’s founding Director, Dr Roy Geary (see programmes on 21st and 28th March). Visit our website for further details and information on special events to be held throughout 2010.

Laura Malaguzzi-Valeri, John FitzGerald, Richard Tol, Seán Lyons, Hugh Hennessy, Conor Devitt, Joanne McLaughlin (Consultant)

This project will set up an Energy model for Northern Ireland. The model will define energy supply and consumption in Northern Ireland by sector. It will also estimate the relationship between consumption and its main economic drivers such as fuel prices and growth trends.

Behavioural Economics and Vulnerable Consumers
Pete Lunn (PI), Seán Lyons
Recent research has revealed a range of biases in consumer behaviour which may limit the effectiveness of competition in certain markets. This project examines whether these behavioural biases are stronger among some groups of vulnerable consumers, primarily older people and those in lower socio-economic groups. The implications of the findings are considered in the context of electronic communications markets.
