NEW PROJECTS
Continuous Professional Development among Primary Teachers
Joanne Banks and Emer Smyth
The uptake of formal and informal learning opportunities for teachers has been the subject of much debate in education research internationally. Moreover, attracting, retaining and developing teachers across the professional life-cycle have become policy priorities in many countries. Studies show that professional development is essential for improved instructional practices, pedagogy and student outcomes. The period since the 1990s has seen a significant expansion in the provision of continuous professional development for teachers in Ireland and research studies have pointed to its value for teacher practice and curriculum implementation. However, little is known about the take-up of continuous professional development across teachers and schools and there is an absence of data on the extent to which teachers participate in continuous professional development courses. This study funded by the Teaching Council, draws upon the Growing Up in Ireland study to examine the factors influencing teacher participation in continuous professional development by analysing teacher and school-level data.
Job Satisfaction and Occupational Stress among Primary School Teachers and
School Principals in Ireland
Merike Darmody and Emer Smyth
The extent to which teachers are satisfied with their jobs and working conditions is likely to have significant consequences for the retention of teachers within the profession, for their approach to teaching, for the creation of collegial relations within a school, and for student outcomes. Dissatisfaction may lead to occupational stress and teacher burnout. The issue of the processes shaping job satisfaction and stress among teachers has received little attention in the Irish context, especially in recent years. Research on this topic is especially relevant in a context where teacher workloads may be changing as a result of a number of factors, including the mainstreaming of pupils with special educational needs and the increase in class sizes resulting from recent expenditure cuts. This study funded by the Teaching Council, draws upon the Growing Up in Ireland study to examine the factors influencing job satisfaction and occupational stress among a large sample of primary teachers and principals in Ireland.
