PROJECTS

Sustainable Electrical Energy Systems
Richard Tol (ESRI). Collaborators: University College Dublin (Lead), University of Limerick, NUI Maynooth and Trinity College Dublin.

The Sustainable Electrical Energy Systems Cluster will provide solutions that enable the development of an environmentally clean and efficient future electricity system. This future system will facilitate very large amounts of renewable energy, in particular wind power. It will help the realisation of clean electric cars and will enable the customer to avail of the cheapest energy prices. All of this will be supported by an advanced telecommunication system. This future system will help reduce fossil fuel use and CO2 emissions, and will improve our energy efficiency at a reduced cost. Jobs will also be created in the area, while attracting industries that wish to interact with a sustainable electrical energy system. The project team will include engineers, mathematicians, economists and geologists and they will work closely with, and be supported by, many of the household names in industry (e.g. Bord Gáis, EirGrid, ESB, Intel and Siemens). Strong industry participation will ensure that the outcomes of the research undertaken are practical and can be applied quickly and efficiently to the benefit of the electricity consumer. The Cluster will also be responsible for educating many students and equipping them with the knowledge required to work in a future electrical energy industry that is clean, reliable and affordable.
