PROJECTS

The Special Class Model in Ireland: How is it Working for Pupils with Special Educational Needs in Mainstream Schools?

Joanne Banks, Selina McCoy, Dorothy Watson.
This joint study between researchers at the ESRI and Trinity College Dublin (Michael Shevlin and Fiona Smyth), offers an important contribution to special educational needs research in Ireland. Previous Irish research has highlighted the need for accurate data on this group of children and the difficulties around interpreting administrative data sources on the number of special classes and children in special classes. This study, funded by the National Council for Special Education, seeks to address these difficulties by providing: - a review of international literature on special classes - an overview of the special class model in Ireland - a national census of schools to establish the nature and extent of special class provision in Ireland - a more in-depth longitudinal study which examines the experiences, progress and outcomes of students placed in special classes. Gathering data of this kind will provide valuable empirical evidence for policy makers and researchers and make a major contribution to the debates around special education in Ireland.

Workplace Equality Policies, Flexible Working Arrangements and their Impact

Helen Russell and Frances McGinnity.
The ESRI have been commissioned to conduct an analysis of workplace equality policies, flexible working arrangements and their impact using the NCPP/ESRI 2009 National Workplace Survey. The project builds on an earlier study, Equality at Work, which uses data from 2003. This project will investigate whether equality policies and flexible working arrangements are being maintained in very changed economic circumstances. What is their impact on outcomes such as work stress, job satisfaction, employee commitment and absenteeism? The recession creates new challenges for the equality agenda, which makes it important to measure the influence of equality policies and flexible work practices on important outcomes for employees and organisations. This research project is co-funded by the Equality Authority and by the European Union Programme for Employment and Social Solidarity - PROGRESS (2007-2013).
