ESRI Conference on Economic Renewal: 'Increasing Ireland’s Productivity and Growth'
Venue: The ESRI, Whitaker Square, Sir John Rogerson’s Quay, Dublin 2.
Date: Wednesday 9/11/2011; Time: 8.45 - 13.00.
This Conference is the first in a special series of half-day Economic Renewal conferences hosted by the ESRI. Each conference will analyse and debate evidence-based approaches to major policy challenges facing Ireland, as we seek to emerge from the economic crisis.
The theme of this first conference is productivity and growth. The papers presented will assess what can be learned from current international and domestic evidence about:
- How best to respond to the unemployment crisis?
- How to target public investment in infrastructure to get the best returns?
- What will boost innovation and productivity in enterprises?
Each paper will be followed by a response from a policymaker in the relevant field and an open Q&A session. The Economic Renewal Conference Series is supported by FBD Trust. Launch of Growing Up in Ireland - Overweight and Obesity Among 9-Year-Olds
Venue: Pearse Street Library.
Date: Wednesday 9/11/2011, Time: 10 am.
This is the latest in a series of Growing Up in Ireland research reports based on data from Wave 1 of the Child Cohort (at 9 years). In light of the significant increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adolescence in Ireland in recent decades, the report examines levels among nine-year-old children and the factors associated with it. These include child and parental recognition, child self-concept and influence of local food environment. Policy implications are also discussed. The report will be launched jointly by the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Ms. Frances Fitzgerald, T.D. and the Minister for Health, Dr. James Reilly T.D., at 10am, Wednesday 9 November 2011 at Pearse Street Library, 138-144 Pearse St, Dublin 2. Growing Up in Ireland Infant Cohort Data Workshop
Venue: The ESRI, Whitaker Square, Sir John Rogerson’s Quay, Dublin 2.
Date: Friday 11/11/2011; Time: 10am to 1pm.
Growing Up in Ireland will host a Data Workshop to promote and support the use of the Infant Cohort dataset on Friday 11 November 2011. Training will cover a range of topics and is designed to give a comprehensive overview of the conduct of the study, the data themselves and supporting documentation. Researchers who have previously attended a data workshop on the Child Cohort dataset should note that this upcoming workshop will cover much of the same content. The Growing Up in Ireland Annual Research Conference will be opened by Ms Frances Fitzgerald T.D., Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, who will launch some Key Findings from the recently completed 3-year cohort as well as some of the first longitudinal findings from the study. ESRI Conference on Economic Renewal: 'Public Services'
Venue: The ESRI, Whitaker Square, Sir John Rogerson’s Quay, Dublin 2
Date: Wednesday 14/12/2011.
What can Ireland do to improve and maintain public services when budgets are being cut? This will be the focus of the second in a special series of half-day conferences on economic renewal, hosted by the ESRI on Wednesday 14 December 2011. Researchers will present the best available evidence, both international and domestic, to address the following key issues for public services:
- Should health service workers be paid according to performance?
- Can we improve the quality of second-level education despite the funding shortage?
- How does the general public rate the quality of different public services in Ireland?
Policymakers and other interested parties will be invited to discuss the evidence offered and to respond to the ideas and issues raised. The Economic Renewal Conference Series is supported by FBD Trust. Further details will be available nearer the time.
