FÁS/ESRI EMPLOYMENT AND VACANCIES SURVEY: NOVEMBER 2006

Key findings of the survey for the month of November 2006:
- Economy-wide vacancies rose slightly with the percentage of firms reporting vacancies across all sectors increasing to 13 per cent;
- The increase in economy-wide vacancies was predominately driven by an increase in vacancies in the construction and industrial sectors, but increased vacancies were reported in all the sectors surveyed;
- Following a decrease in October, the percentage of construction sector firms reporting vacancies increased by five percentage points to 15 per cent;
- The percentage of firms in the industry sector with vacancies increased to 19 per cent, while vacancies in the retail sector increased to four per cent and in the services sector vacancies increased by one percentage point to 16 per cent;
- The Net Employment Expectations indicator for all sectors remained negative at minus one per cent indicating that the percentage of employers anticipating a fall in employment levels over the coming months is slightly higher than those predicting an increase;
- The employment expectations of construction employers decreased to their lowest level in almost four years with the Net Employment Expectations indicator for the sector falling by three percentage point to minus 12 per cent;
- Industry sector employers' employment expectations improved: the Net Employment Expectations indicator for the sector increased by three percentage points but the indicator continued to remain negative at minus four per cent;
- Following an increase in the previous two months, the expectations of retail employers regarding future employment levels in their firms deteriorated;
- The services sector was the only sector surveyed that reported positive employment expectations;
- The most frequently reported difficult-to-fill vacancies in each sector were: Construction Quantity surveyors Industry Managers, sales personnel, and technicians Retail Sales staff Services Managers, insurance brokers and accountants
