Abstract: This research project examines patterns and trends of export performance in Ireland and a selection of small open European countries over the past decade. First, it analyses patterns and changes of product and market specialisation for both indigenous and foreign-owned enterprises. Second, it examines whether Irish exports have specialised in fast growing products and markets in world exports over the period. Third, it investigates the determinants of export performance dynamics focusing on product and market structures and competitiveness effects. Fourth, it analyses the adjustment of exports with respect to the extensive and intensive margins over the business cycle.
