In 2017 revised grading bands were used for the first time in recording and presenting Leaving Certificate examination grades. The new scale has 8 grades at higher and ordinary level, replacing the 14-point earlier scale. The aim of this study, commissioned by the NCCA, is to examine the impact of the new grading bands at school level and will seek to inform policy development and further research on the topic. The study will use a mixed methods approach, combining detailed analyses of Leaving Certificate examination data with in-depth interviews with principals, guidance counsellors, teachers, students and parents in 12 schools. The analysis will examine school and student-level experience in relation to subject level take-up and grade performance under the new grading system. The study is due for completion in August 2018.
