ESRI Involvement in Current National Surveys

Women’s Experience in Paid Work During and After Pregnancy

The Economic and Social Research Institute and Amárach research  have been commissioned to carry out a study looking at women’s experience in paid work during and after pregnancy by the Crisis Pregnancy Agency and the Equality Authority.  It is the first study of its kind in Ireland.

The Department of Social and Family Affairs has kindly agreed to help us and to send out this survey on our behalf . The names and addresses of 5,000 mothers who have had a baby in the last two and a half years have been drawn at random from Child Benefit records. All of the information collected will be confidential and the questionnaires will be completely anonymous.

Women are being asked to complete a short questionnaire about their experiences at work during pregnancy.  The purpose of the study is to find out about a range of topics including pregnancy at work, maternity leave and deciding whether or not to return to work after the birth of a child.  The information being collected is very important as it will help us to understand the challenges women face and the kinds of services that would help to improve circumstances for pregnant women and working parents.

Only women who have received a questionnaire in the post are being asked to respond to the questionnaire. They can respond by post, on-line at www.amarach.com/work.htm or over the phone (see questionnaire for contact details).

If you have any queries about the study or if you have received a copy of the questionnaire and would like to contact us, please ring the freephone number at Amárach Research 1800 303080 or contact helen.russell@esri.ie or dorothy.watson@esri.ie

Economic and Sports Survey

Telephone Survey of Adults

The ESRI  conducts a nationwide confidential telephone survey of  adults to to collect data for a number of projects at the ESRI, including the Sports Monitor (for the Irish Sports Council) and Consumer Sentiment Index (jointly published by the ESRI and  KBC Bank Ireland).   The aim s of the survey  are to  (1) track changes over time in consumer sentiment and (2) track changes over time in participation in sports and physical activity .

The results will help us to understand how  levels of confidence in the economy are changing so that we can plan for economic recovery.  The information on sports and physical activity is being asked on behalf of the Irish Sports Council, but they relate to a broad range of physical activities as well as traditional sports, including walking, cycling, other outdoor pursuits, water sports and non-competitive or recreational exercise.  This information helps the Irish Sports Council understand who participates in sports and exercise, how it is organised and financed and the kinds of things that encourage people to participate.

The telephone numbers for the survey are selected at random from all around the country so that we can speak to a representative group of  adults age 16 and over .

If you are contacted by telephone by one of our interviewers , please complete the short survey.    The quality of the information depends on us speaking to as wide a rtange of people as possible each month.  All the information collected will be treated in the strictest of confidence.
