The Educational Policy Research Centre was established in the Economic and Social Research Institute in 1995. The Centre, which is headed by Emer Smyth, carries out research which is policy relevant but also contributes to scientific knowledge concerning all levels of the Irish educational system.
Key research areas have included:
- The effectiveness of specific education and training programmes;
- The impact of school process and organisation on a range of student outcomes, including academic performance, subject take-up and personal-social development;
- Patterns of, and influences on, early school leaving;
- School provision for newcomer (immigrant) students at primary and post-primary level;
- The relationship between educational qualifications and labour market 'success';
- The graduate labour market and the impact of third-level educational qualifications;
- Adult participation in education and training;
- Cost implications of changes in third-level student support structures;
- Evaluation of education and training policy.
The work programme of the Centre is supported by the Department of Education and Science. Complementary research has been carried out for a number of other organisations.
