Special Educational Needs Prevalence Study

Researchers

McCoy, Selina / Banks, Joanne

While the availability of information on the educational system has improved in recent years, gaps remain in our knowledge about certain groups of children and young people. In particular, lack of information on children with specific disabilities has been identified as a barrier to effective provision. This study, commissioned by the National Council for Special Education (NCSE) aims to:

  • Assess the range of existing Irish data on disability, special educational needs and educational provision for children with special educational needs (SEN);

  • Use this assessment to provide an estimate of the potential cohort of the population covered by the EPSEN Act 2004;

  • Place this assessment in the context of international best practice in relation to data on SEN and disability.

These objectives will be achieved through international literature and policy reviews, analysis of existing data sources and in-depth interviews with relevant stakeholders and experts in the field of education, SEN and disability.
