Richard S J Tol

Professor Richard S.J. Tol is engaged in research on Environmental & Natural Resources and Energy. He joined the ESRI in 2006. He is the Professor of the Economics of Climate Change at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He specialises in climate, energy and environmental economics. He holds a Doctorate in Economics and a Masters of Science in Econometrics from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
Before joining ESRI, he was the Michael Otto Professor of Sustainability and Global Change in the Department of GeoSciences and the Department of Economic Sciences of Hamburg University, Germany. He has been an advisor to the Netherlands Ministry of the Environment, the Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs, the German Parliament, the US Office of Technology Assessment, the US Department of Energy, the US Government Accountability Office, the US Environmental Protection Agency, the United Nations Environment Program, the EC-DG Environment, the UK House of Lords, the Oireachtas, the Ireland Environmental Protection Agency, the Ireland Department of Energy, the Ireland Department of the Environment, and the Ireland Department of Finance. He has been an author (from contributing to convening) for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and is thus a co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. Richard is the co-editor-in-chief of Energy Economics, and an associated editor of Economics - the e-Journal.
Richard was recently elected GTAP Research Fellow "in recognition of his innovative applications of the GTAP Data Base in the field of environmental economics". He is ranked among the top 500 economists in the world.
His key areas of expertise include the economic impacts of climate change (particularly sea level rise, water resources, and tourism), international climate policy, greenhouse gas emission reduction, integrated assessment modelling, and applied econometrics.
He has been awarded a large number of research grants from Dutch, German, Irish and European funding agencies and coordinated three collaborative European projects. He (co-) developed a number of models, including FUND, HTM, DIVA, CHIMP and GTAP-W. He is currently developing ESRI's Sustainable Development Research Model (ISus) for the Environmental Protection Agency.
