DR EDGAR MORGENROTH
Dr Edgar Morgenroth is an Associate Research Professor and programme co-ordinator for research on transport and infrastructure at the ESRI. He holds a PhD in Economics from Keele University in the UK and a Master’s degree in Economics and Finance from the National University of Ireland, Maynooth
His research interests include transport economics, international trade, economic geography and public economics. Within these broad research topics he is particularly interested in the commuting patterns, economic returns to infrastructure, determinants of the volume of trade, the determinants of firm location, regional disparities, regional policy and the efficiency of public investment. His work is widely published including papers in eminent Journals such as the Journal of International Economics, Canadian Journal of Economics, Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics, Applied Economics and Regional Studies.
Dr Morgenroth has carried out extensive research as part of major studies on public investment in Ireland that were carried out as background studies for the formulation of the Irish National Development Plans. For example he was project co-ordinator on the research study on Investment Priorities carried out for the Department of Finance. In addition he has collaborated on a range of major studies on EU Structural Funds such as the Ex-post Evaluation of the Community Support Framework for the period 1994 to 1999.
As part of his work on regional policy Dr Morgenroth developed a county level demographic projection model (IC-POP). He has published a number of studies that considered the impact of a range of industrial structure issues such as productivity, regional specialisation and SMEs on regional performance. Furthermore, he has considered the appropriate allocation of functions among regional and local levels of government and the degree to which the fiscal system in Ireland redistributes resources across regions.
Dr Morgenroth has analysed the impact of exchange rate volatility on exports from Ireland to Britain and the impact of transport infrastructure on the volume of trade. Furthermore, he has been involved in two InterTrade Ireland funded studies that aimed to addressing the causes of inconsistencies in North/South trade statistics.
Dr Morgenroth is treasurer of the Regional Studies Association, a council member of the Social and Statistical Inquiry Society of Ireland, a member of the Central Statistics Office Population Projection Expert Group and a member of the Industry Advisory Board of the School of Construction, Faculty of the Built Environment at DIT.
Dr Morgenroth is currently on leave of absence.
