Financial security in the older population in Ireland: assessing the impact of austerity and policy change

The purpose of this project, funded under the HSE Ageing Awards, is to examine financial security in the older population in Ireland, using nationally representative micro-data on a variety of financial outcomes from two complementary surveys, The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) and the Household Finance and Consumption Survey (HFCS).

Building on previous research by using new sources of data and a wider range of financial outcomes, the project will examine:

  1. the impact of macroeconomic and policy changes over the course of the economic crisis on financial outcomes such as income, wealth, savings, debt, retirement preparedness, retirement expectations, health expenses and insurance cover among the older population;
  2. the relative position of the older population with regard to these and other outcomes (e.g., credit card debt).
