Consumer Sentiment falls in September

The overall KBC Ireland/ESRI Consumer Sentiment Index decreased from 101.1 in August to 100.6 this month. The 3-month moving average also decreased this month from 101.2 in August to 100.5.

Commenting on the results Daniel Foley, ESRI, said

  • “All three main indices experienced a marginal decrease this month with some evidence that consumers are becoming more cautious. While there has been some volatility in each of the three Indices in the first half of the year the broad trend, has remained positive.”

  • “Results from the sentiment survey are somewhat mixed in September. Three of the five main components fell while the remaining two rose. It appears that consumers are feeling more confident about the general economic situation this month. There has also been an increase in the proportion of people who believe now is a good time to make a large household purchase.”

  • “Consumers, however, remain cautious in regard to certain future prospects. Both components which ask consumers about their financial situation and employment prospects in the coming 12 months are weaker this month.”
