Economic Analysis | Associate Research Professor
Dr. Iulia Siedschlag is Associate Research Professor and Head of the Centre for Internationalisation and Competitiveness. She is Adjunct Professor at the Department of Economics, Trinity College Dublin.

From January 2014 until January 2015 she was Senior Scientist in the European Commission’s Directorate General Joint Research Centre in the Knowledge for Growth Unit at the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies in Seville, Spain. In this position, she led the in-house research on the internationalisation of industrial R&D and innovation and advised the European Commission on rethinking European Union’s strategy and policies for economic growth.
Before joining the ESRI, she was Senior Researcher and Scientific Co-ordinator of the Research Programme “European Integration, Structural Change and Adjustment to Shocks” at the Center for European Integration Studies (ZEI) of the University of Bonn (1999-2005).

Iulia’s key areas of expertise include international and European integration, economic growth of open economies, international trade and investment, technological change, R&D and innovation. Her current research focuses on the links between international trade, foreign direct investment, innovation and productivity.

Her research has been published in leading peer reviewed international journals such as Research Policy, Labour Economics, Kyklos, Applied Economics, Open Economies Review, Journal of Economic Integration, China Economic Review, Empirica, Regional Studies, Economics of Innovation and New Technology, Journal of Economics and Statistics, International Journal of Public Policy, Journal of International Business and Economy, and books published by internationally renowned publishing houses such as Oxford University Press, McMillan, Edward Elgar, Springer, Ashgate, and Routledge. Her research findings have been cited in a significant number of publications including international peer reviewed journals as well as studies and policy documents by national and international bodies including Dáil Éireann, the European Commission, the European Parliament, and the OECD.

She has received several research awards and fellowships from private and public organisations including Il Sole 24 Ore, the British Council, University of Warwick and the European Commission. In 2004 she received the Best Paper Award from the International Business and Economy Conference in San Francisco for her research on the location of manufacturing in Central and Eastern Europe in the context of increased economic integration.

Iulia has been appointed to numerous international expert groups and provided professional advice to international organisations including the European Commission, the European Central Bank, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, the Asian Development Bank Institute, and the World Economic Forum. Based on her expertise, the advice she provided centred on: economic growth in the context of increased international integration; the European Research Area and a knowledge-based economy; managing international capital flows; macroeconomic adjustment in the euro area; euro area enlargement; international economic integration and the location of industrial activity; labour mobility.

Iulia has been awarded a significant number of research grants from international and national organisations and has successfully led a large number of international research consortia involving research institutes and universities from Europe and the United States.
