Accessibility Statement
The ESRI is committed to ensuring its website is as accessible as possible to all, and we are working towards ensuring this outcome, in accordance with European Union (Accessibility of Websites and Mobile Applications of Public Sector Bodies) Regulations 2020.
This accessibility statement applies to content published on www.esri.ie.
Compliance status
We have recently engaged with an external accessibility partner who carried out a full independent accessibility audit of this website to assess our conformance with EN 301 549 v 3.2.1.
This website is partially conformant with EN 301 549 v 3.2.1.
Partially conformant means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard. These non-conformant parts are listed below, along with a brief explanation of their user impact and the relevant EN 301 549 success criteria (SC).
Non-Accessible content
- Keyboard: In publications, the keyboard-only user has to tab many times to access page content.
- Colour contrast: Some text and buttons have contrast less than 4.5:1, which may be difficult to read or distinguish (EN 9.1.4.1; 9.1.4.3 and 9.1.4.11).
- Links: Some links on the Careers page, FAQS, and About pages need better context and may not be understood by screen-reader users. On the ‘Events’ page, the screen reader user is not informed that the 'Register here' link will open a Zoom webinar page (EN 9.2.4.4).
- Missing state information: ‘Show details’ link in cookies widget is missing state information. Unexpanded Cookies button is missing correct state information. Publications page ‘Advanced’ button is missing state information. Events page 'Add to Calendar' toggle button is missing state information to tell the user it is expanded or collapsed. Current active People category is not announced by the screen reader. (EN 9.4.1.2)
- Incorrect role on some controls: ‘Show details’ link in cookies widget has an incorrect role. The Tab panel on the FAQs page is missing suitable roles (EN 9.4.1.2)
- Incorrect accessible name: The Search <input> accessible name is 'Keywords', which may not be clear to screen reader users (EN 9.4.1.2)
- Unlabelled inputs: On the publications page ‘Advanced’ widget the accessible name/label is not announced when the inputs have focus. The ‘Date from’ and ‘Date to’ fields do not announce the ‘From/To’ information (EN 9.4.1.2)
- Videos: ESRI videos are missing suitable audio description (EN.9.1.2.1, EN 9.1.2.3 and EN 9.1.2.5).
- Missing alternate text: Social media images need better alternate text (EN 9.1.1.1)
- Heading structure: Heading structure is incorrect on homepage with links as headings, extra headings in navigation menu. On various publications ‘Author(s)’, ‘Research Area’ and ‘Publication details’ headings structure needs improvements (EN 9.2.4.6)
- PDFs: Many of our PDFs have some document structure but need improvements with page titles, chart colour contrast and page structure. (EN 10.1.4.3, EN 10.2.4.2, EN 10.2.4.6)
-
Charts: Charts on news page do not present information in a programmatically associated way (EN 9.1.3.1)
Other known issues:
- Screen readers: Cookies content is sometimes seen by the screen reader user when it should be hidden. On the Publications page ‘Advanced’ button the widget contents may be ‘seen’ by the screen reader when closed. The publications ‘Search’ widget is missing a submit button so how to submit a search may not be clear. On the publications page when in browse mode/virtual cursor mode the contents of the collapsed menus get focus using NVDA even when dismissed by press ESC. There is an extra heading in the pagination widget that is ‘seen’ by the screen reader user. The three ‘Calendar’, ‘Time’ and ‘Place’ icons used in the Events pages are hidden from screen reader users and could be useful to orientate screen reader users.
- Keyboard: Visible focus indicators are in need of improvement sitewide.
- Animations: On the Publications and Events using the mouse can trigger content animations - unwanted animations may be distracting for some users.
- Mobile screen reader users: Extra 'Apply' button is seen on People page when swiping on Android and iOS. Links to People announced a 'Footer' link on iOS
