Child poverty and educational outcomes

Experience of poverty is significantly related to poorer educational outcomes. This event will present new research that examines the mechanisms through which persistent poverty in childhood is linked to cognitive development and educational attitudes. Five sets of factors are considered – family relations, home learning environment, out-of-school activities, neighbourhood effects, and school/teacher factors. The study draws on Growing Up in Ireland Cohort ‘08 data and focuses on outcomes at age 9 and 13 years.
