ESRI Newsletter | April 2025

Dear Reader,

One of my last events as Director of the ESRI was also one of the highlights of my ten-year term. Last week, Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD spoke at a conference where we reviewed the research the ESRI has published over the last four years under a joint research programme with the Shared Island Unit in the Department of the Taoiseach. I had the pleasure of interviewing the Taoiseach about his shared island initiative and his vision for enhanced collaboration on the island of Ireland.

The Taoiseach also announced a new phase of the ESRI/Shared Island joint research programme. This allows us to continue expanding the evidence base on North-South issues. This should, in turn, foster better informed debate on the scope for increased collaboration across the island for the benefit of all.

Turning to housing, we recently published a report examining how short-term let activity, such as Airbnb, interacts with the rental sector. Our findings highlight the importance of establishing a register covering all short-term let activity across Ireland to provide timely data to be used in conjunction with rental sector data. This would monitor activity, changes in usage patterns and particular pressures in local areas. This step is crucial for ensuring a balanced approach to regulation that considers the need for tourist accommodation and rental housing for locals.

On the climate front, my colleagues in the Behavioural Science Unit published a fascinating report examining attitudes around climate change. It found that most people – farmers, urban, and rural residents alike – are worried about the climate and willing to take action. However, people misperceive others' worry and willingness. It argued for the need to recognise that pro-climate views are held by the large majority.

Lastly, as the ESRI relies on our sponsors, patrons, and corporate members to support our work, I am delighted to report that in recent months the following organisations have joined as corporate members: Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Department of Education, Arup, and Department of the Taoiseach.

Regards,
