ESRI Newsletter, October 2022

Dear Reader,

This month saw the launch of a new research programme with the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science. The research aims to examine the country’s skills requirements and will feed into policy-formation in the coming years.

We had the opportunity to discuss our Shared Island research in two public forums in October. First, a group of us appeared before the Seanad Public Consultation Committee on the Constitutional Future of the Island of Ireland. And later in the month, we co-hosted an event in Belfast with Ulster University to discuss our comparative work on North-South education systems. That our reports are the topic of ongoing debate and discussion is a reflection on both the importance of this work and the quality.

I was also particularly proud to see my colleagues engage with the Women's Parliamentary Caucus last week. The Caucus is a cross-party forum for Irish women parliamentarians to discuss and campaign on issues. ESRI research on care work was under discussion and it will be interesting to see how the Caucus progresses on the issue.

As ever, our recent publications and upcoming events are detailed below. Tomorrow we will launch the second report in our research programme with the Community Foundation for Ireland. Poverty, income inequality and living standards in Ireland: 2nd annual report will build on last year’s report. You can register for tomorrow’s webinar below.

Have a relaxing mid-term.

Regards,

Professor Alan Barrett
