This year, due to the building closure caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) has hosted several webinars and launched a selection of publications online.

Child poverty in Ireland and the pandemic recession

This webinar looks at trends in child poverty during the Great Recession of 2008 and simulates the effect of recent COVID-19-related job losses alongside emergency income support measures on child income poverty in 2020. It is the fourth webinar in the 'Budget Perspectives 2021' series.

Origin and integration: A study of migrants in the 2016 Irish Census

Date: Thursday, 4 June 2020

Presenter: Frances McGinnity

David Stanton, TD, Minister of State for Equality, Immigration and Integration launched a new study that measures language ability, educational attainment, unemployment and occupational attainment for detailed country-of-birth groups. The webinar included a 30-minute presentation of the findings. This was followed by responses to the report by Dr Thomas Liebig (Senior Migration Specialist, OECD Paris) and Salome Mbugua (AkiDwA and Commissioner, IHREC). A short Q&A session was held at the end of the webinar.

National statuses for migrants in need of protection: Ireland and the EU

Date: Thursday, 28 May 2020



Presenters: Tatiana Kistruga (ICF), Sarah Groarke (EMN Ireland) and Patricia Brazil (TCD)

The webinar presents the findings of a new EU-wide, European Migration Network (EMN) study on national statuses for people in need of protection. It considers the Irish report to the EU-wide study, published in January 2020. The presentations were followed by responses from Eibhlin Byrne (Director of the Irish Refugee and Protection Programme) and Enda O'Neill (Head of Office of UNHCR Ireland).

Quarterly Economic Commentary, Summer 2020

Presenter: Conor O'Toole

This webinar assesses the future prospects for the Irish economy under three different scenarios: Baseline (“New normal with ongoing physical distancing”, Severe (“Second wave requiring strict lockdown”) and Benign (“Successful disease suppression”). Conor O’Toole’s presentation was followed by a Q&A session with the report's co-author, Kieran McQuinn.

The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on consumption and indirect taxes in Ireland

This webinar looked at how the decline in household spending, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, could reduce indirect tax revenue this year by more than a fifth. It is the third webinar in the 'Budget Perspectives 2021' series. The webinar consisted of a presentation by Cathal and was followed by a Q&A session with the report's co-author, Conor O'Toole.

Minimum wage policy in Ireland

This webinar provided an overview of minimum wage policy in Ireland over the last twenty years and discusses the implications of the Covid-19 crisis for minimum wage employment. It is the second webinar in the 'Budget Perspectives 2021' series. The webinar consisted of a presentation by Paul and was followed by a short Q&A session.

The potential costs and distributional effect of COVID-19 related unemployment in Ireland

This webinar investigated the direct impact on households’ incomes and the exchequer of a range of unemployment shocks, along with that of policy measures announced in recent weeks. It is the first webinar in the 'Budget Perspectives 2021' series. The webinar consisted of a 10-minute presentation and was followed by a Q&A session, with the report's co-author, Barra Roantree.
