Student Experience at School and Supports for Equal Learning Opportunities

This study is conducted as part of the Horizon Europe EFFEct project. The main aim is to generate evidence on how targeted policy measures to promote equity and inclusion in Ireland’s school system contribute to supporting students’ educational needs.

To this end, the study adopts a mixed-methods design comprising two components:

  1. qualitative research, which seeks to understand students’ experiences in second-level DEIS schools and explore how existing supports for equity and inclusion are experienced; and
  2. quantitative research, in which the qualitative findings are set in the context of analyses of nationally representative data from the Growing Up in Ireland study to explore mechanisms of addressing educational disadvantage and inequality.

Drawing on the combined findings, the project will develop policy recommendations on the supports schools need to address students’ diverse educational needs and, ultimately, strengthen efforts to promote equity and inclusion in Irish schools.
