Embargo: Friday, 7th October, 00:01am

Alan Barrett and Ide Kearney have been appointed as the new co-editors of the ESRI's flagship publication, the Quarterly Economic Commentary. They take over from Danny McCoy who is leaving the ESRI to take up a post in the private sector.

Dr Barrett holds a Ph.D. from Michigan State University and joined the ESRI in 1994. He is an expert on the economics of the labour market and has also worked on demography and the public finances. His studies of the role of migration have helped to develop our understanding of how the Irish labour market works.

Dr Kearney joined the Institute in 1996 from the Central Bank. She holds a doctorate from the European University Institute in Florence and is now a consultant to the Institute, based in the Netherlands. She has worked on developing the Institute's econometric model of the Irish macro-economy and has co-authored several editions of the ESRI's biennial Medium Term Review.

ESRI Director Professor Brendan Whelan commented: "The Quarterly Economic Commentary has always been a key focus for the Institute's research and attracts widespread attention among policy makers and the general public. Alan and Ide bring an immense range of skills and experience to their task and I am confident that they will further enhance the depth of analysis provided by the QEC".
