FAS/ESRI LAUNCH QUARTERLY REPORT ON EMPLOYMENT AND VACANCIES

The new FÁS/ESRI quarterly employment and vacancies report, prepared by the ESRI, is based on monthly surveys of private sector employers’ experience of employment trends, their views on employment prospects in the short term, whether they have any vacancies and if they are finding it difficult-to-fill vacancies. The report provides new indicators of employer sentiment on the outlook for employment and of employers’ demand for labour.

Key findings of the first report for 2004 Quarter 1:

  • Overall employment in the private sector is expected to increase;
  • The construction sector is booming with employment expected to increase further over the next few months;
  • 1 in 5 construction firms have vacancies and almost all of them are finding them difficult to fill;
  • Service sector employers also expect employment growth;
  • Expectations have also improved in the industry sector with slightly more firms in the sector at the end of the quarter expecting employment to increase rather than to decrease;
  • By contrast, retail sector employers are rather pessimistic and do not anticipate increasing employment over the next few months.
