Former ESRI Research Professor Gerry Hughes passes away

The staff and Council of the ESRI were saddened to learn of the passing of our former colleague Gerry Hughes on 12 March 2021.

Gerry joined the ESRI in 1968 and retired as a Research Professor in 2006. He was awarded a Research Fellowship by the Institute for the years 1977 to 1979 and he also spent a period of time on secondment to NESC in the 1970s.

He published on a range of topics but his most significant contributions were in the areas of migration, pensions and workforce planning.

Following his retirement from the Institute, he was appointed a Visiting Professor at the School of Business, Trinity College Dublin and continued his research on pensions.

Gerry was an immensely kind, generous and supportive colleague and we will remember him fondly. We offer our sympathies to his family and friends.
