Using Healthcare Payments Systems to Promote Efficiency in Hospitals

Ireland faces a major challenge of improving efficiency in the acute hospital sector while maintaining appropriate access and raising quality standards. All health systems face similar challenges and most countries now use classification systems for hospital activities which allow them to fund and monitor in a way that supports strategies for increasing hospital efficiency and effectiveness. These systems are referred to as case-mix classification systems and there is now a large international literature looking at their impact and effectiveness on hospital quality and efficiency. This week the ESRI is hosting a five day programme of events on case-mix classification, analysis and financing for the acute hospital sector organised by leading international experts as part of the Patient Classification Systems International (PCSI) organisation. More details of these events can be found on https://www.esri.ie/news_events/events/forthcoming_events/event_details/index.xml?id=274 .  The programme provides specialist training for participants working in health systems around the world, including Europe, Australia, South Africa and North America.  On Wednesday afternoon (January 26) these international experts will participate in an open seminar organised by the ESRI for Irish health professionals, researchers and policy makers. This seminar will address international developments in the use and application of case-mix classification systems to support greater efficiency in the acute hospital sector.
