Public Perception of Mineral Exploration
We are working with the Geological Survey Ireland as part of PACIFIC, an EU-funded Horizon 2020 consortium investigating innovative mineral exploration techniques. We are contributing to a social research strand of the project, looking at the public’s perception of mineral exploration and mining in Ireland.
Our experimental work focuses on the psychological processes underlying the formation of attitudes towards mineral exploration and mining. We are testing whether the order in which people are presented with information in support of and against mineral exploration matters to their opinions on it, and whether early adoption of a position on mineral exploration based on a limited information hinders integration of balancing information. The results of this research will help to understand which ways of information presentation would allow people to develop more informed opinions about the risks and benefits associated with mineral exploration and mining.
