The latest Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) medium-term forecasts suggest, the authors state, that Ireland will experience a period of rapid growth over the next 5 years and that there will be a significant growth in employment. The implications of these changes for emigration, the growth of the labour force and employment and unemployment are considered. Forecasts of the structure of employment in 1997 are presented using the European Union harmonised industrial and occupational employment classifications.
