Research into Young People’s Online Engagement and Behaviours

While digital technologies offer numerous benefits, such as access to information, educational tools and social connection, they can also pose risks to mental wellbeing. In response, many governments, including Ireland’s, have introduced policies to protect children online, with further measures under consideration. Understanding when and how digital technologies cause harm is essential for developing effective policy. New research funded by Coimisiún na Meán will examine how young people engage with the online world. Informed by a desk-based research and policy review and analysis of existing data, the study will centre on a survey of second-level students across diverse school settings, exploring young people’s contemporary online experiences and behaviour.
