The Economic and Social Research Institute launches the book 'Expanding Post-School Learning Opportunities: Nature and effects of Growth in Post-School Education/Training in the 1990s' on Wednesday 28 May 2003.
The book describes the results of a study carried out by Damian Hannan, Research Professor (ESRI, now retired), Selina McCoy, Research Officer (ESRI), and Audrey Doyle (former Research Assistant, ESRI). This study was funded by the Department of Education and Science.
The study looked at the change in further education for school leavers who did not immediately go on to third level education.
The key findings are:
- There has been a big increase in the number and type of Further Educational Courses (such as PLC Courses) available to post school students
- The numbers going on immediately to further education courses rose significantly
- Organisations are increasingly demanding higher qualifications and therefore those without qualifications are more likely to remain unemployed for longer than in the past
- Many organisations are not supporting staff training and development, although larger organisations are better than smaller organisations at offering staff training and development
