Achim Ahrens joined the ESRI as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in September 2017. He holds an MSc in Economics from the University of Edinburgh and a PhD from Heriot-Watt University. His doctoral thesis linked spatial econometric methods and the LASSO estimator, and included applications to conflict research and housing markets. Prior to taking up his role at the ESRI, he worked as a Research Associate in Heriot-Watt University on energy economics. He contributed to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy, a publicly available resource for global energy data. Achim’s research interests include econometrics, ‘Big Data’ methods, spatial economics and energy economics.
